1. Why did you decide to minor in Irish Language and Literature?

I have always been very curious about the Irish language because my grandfather from Galway spoke it as his second language. Also, I grew up hearing and seeing bits of the language in my Irish dance community and always wished that I understood it. When I came to Notre Dame, I knew that I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to take an Irish language course. I absolutely loved my first Irish language class and decided to pursue the minor in Irish Language and Literature.

2. What types of research, internships and/or activities have you been involved in relation to the minor?

As an English and supplemental Spanish major, I have been able to relate my study of Irish language and literature to my other coursework. Specifically, I have been able to compare English, Spanish, and Irish literary traditions as well as incorporate my knowledge of the Irish language and Irish literature into some of the poems that I have written. I hope to spend some time studying in Ireland to enhance my studies.

3. How have the professors, courses, lectures and/or activities had an impact on you?

As an Irish-American with Irish-born grandparents, I have always felt a tangible connection to Ireland and Irish culture. As I delve deeper into my studies of Irish language and literature, however, I find that there is so much more that I can learn about Irish culture and history. My study of Irish language and literature is both academically and personally satisfying, opening doors to new linguistic and literary horizons and enabling me to continue discovering my sense of myself as an Irish-American.

4. How do you think your minor in Irish Language and Literature will help you or influence you in the future?

I hope to be able to combine my interest in Irish literature with my study of English and Spanish literature. As an English major, studying Irish literature has greatly enhanced my study of literature by enabling me to explore a different literary tradition. Also, my study of the Irish language will give me access to the texts of Irish literature in the original Irish.

5. Would you recommend a minor in Irish Language and Literature to other students? If yes, why?

I would recommend this minor to anyone who is curious about the Irish language, Irish literature, or Irish culture. Though difficult at times, Irish is a fun and worthwhile language to learn, and all of the classes that I have taken in the department have been on the small side and very interactive. The department is very welcoming, and my professors have been extremely willing to go above and beyond to help me get the most out of my studies.
