Minors

The University of Notre Dame offers undergraduate minors in Irish Language and Literature and in Irish Studies.

Minor in Irish Language and Literature

To qualify for a minor in Irish Language and Literature, you must:

• Demonstrate intermediate proficiency in the Irish language by passing: Intermediate Irish I and Intermediate Irish II.
• Complete 3 full-credit courses in the Irish Language and Literature.

No capstone essay is required.

Interdisciplinary Minor in Irish Studies

All undergraduates across the University’s colleges and schools can earn an Irish Studies minor.

The requirements are straightforward and conducive to opportunities at the University for study in Ireland:

• Take five full-credit classes cross-listed with Irish Studies for a minimum of 15 credits. The five classes can be in such departments as English, History, Anthropology, Political Science, and Film, Television, and Theatre, in addition to the Irish Language Initiatives. Some courses offer the opportunity for travel to Ireland.
  • Examples of undergraduate courses include Beginning Irish, From Warrior Queens to Punk Poets: Sex and Power in Irish Literature, Archaeology of Ireland, The Making of Modern Ireland, Celtic and Viking Mythology, Global Ireland, The Irish Short Story, and The Northern Ireland "Troubles."
• In lieu of one of the five courses, students may take an independent study or complete a Capstone essay with a Keough-Naughton Institute faculty fellow.
• The five classes can be taken on the Notre Dame home campus, at Notre Dame Dublin (O'Connell House), Dublin City University, or the National University of Ireland, Galway.

Please note: Classes in the Irish language are strongly encouraged but not required; some funded opportunities abroad are available by preference or exclusively for students taking Irish language.
